Red velvet oatmeal porridge is a variant of my Chocolate oatmeal. With a little switch of ingredients used, you can get creative and make the perfect red breakfast treat for yourself and your on Valentine’s Day or any morning you feel like springing up something different.
1 ½cupsrolled oats (if gluten-free use certified gluten-free oats)
1cupButtermilk
2 ½cupsmilk(You can also use a mix of water and milk)
2TablespoonSugar (Or any sweetener of choice; maple syrup, honey etc)
1 ½Tablespoonscocoa powder
¼teaspoonsalt
2 to 3drops red food coloring(See note 1 for alternative coloring)
1tspvanilla extract

Instructions
Add milk, sugar, salt, vanilla extract and cocoa powder to saucepan Mix and turn on heat to medium.
Add the oats to the milk cocoa mixture. Add the food color and Cook on medium till fully cooked. Takes about 6 mins to get fully cooked. Stir continuously to prevent burning. Serve with more milk, toppings of choice.
Notes
If you would rather not use food coloring gel. Use beet powder or hibiscus petal powder to add some color the oatmeal. If you do so, mix it in when you add the cocoa powder.
Use certified gluten free oats if you are gluten free.
You can substitute milk with plant based milk if you are dairy free or vegan. You can also substitute some of the milk in the recipe with water if you want.
