Brown Sugar is one of my favorite baking ingredients. I knew a day would come when I would have to make a homemade version. Actually It’s a very easy blend to make but I never really wanted to bother because I always, always have a bag lying around.

Homemade Brown Sugar

Well during Easter when I wanted to make Hot Cross Buns I found out I had run out. I decided to do without it and just bake with white sugar. Prior to that I had made a quick substitute for brown sugar when I was making these Chocolate Chip Cookie bars. How did I make a quick substitution. I just added a few drops of Molasses (Black Treacle) to the cookie dough while it was mixing. In other words I didn’t have any accurate measurement to share with you guys.

Well I decided to do the experiment today and have an accurate measurement for anyone to use. Brown sugar is made with just 2 ingredients; white sugar and molasses (also known as Black Treacle), and There are 2 types, the light brown variety and the dark brown one. The difference is in the color and quantity of molasses mixed with the white sugar.

Light Brown Sugar has a light brown color and has less molasses in the mix.

Dark Brown sugar has a dark brown color and has more molasses in the mix.

What recipes can we use brown sugar for?

These are a few of them.

A quick tip to save you some time, make sure to use a food processor ? but if you don’t have one, your God given hands is perfect if you don’t mind getting it messy a bit. Just wash your hands clean or use a food grade hand glove then rub the molasses into the sugar till well combined. And you have your brown sugar light or dark in no time.

Excellent recipe and tips! Brown sugar is one of those things I *never* have and I’m always scrambling to make-do. But I always have molasses (probably because a jar last eons, lol) and usually have sugar. So now I know the right proportions. Pinning so I don’t forget!

  6. Wow! What a revelation, and all this while I thought Brown sugar was a healthier option. Think I will stick to Palm sugar hence forth for normal use and use brown sugar for baking or cooking! Thanks for the tip!

    1. You bet. I thought so as well that it was a healthier option and I wondered why but I guess itโ€™s because of the presence of The molasses. Thanks for stopping by?
