If your guests have a bit of an idea of your worries they would be inclined to change their minds because their intention is to come so you can enjoy one another’s company and not to stress you. So you need to relax.

1. Create a Cleaning Schedule

Always have a plan in everything you do. Making your home guest ready requires planning. Make cleaning your home a regular affair. That way everyone gets used to house cleaning chores. Create a cleaning schedule. In that cleaning schedule, make sure your house is cleaned thoroughly at least once a week. Other days in the week you can do some light cleaning. I am not saying you should be a clean freak but make a clean home your priority. Little things like

  • Picking up toys from the floor and putting them back where they belong.
  • If you have kids, daily sweeping will help
  • Discourage leaving dirty plates in the sink overnight.
  • Intentionally keep your home clutter free. You need to realize there are many things lying around you may not need. Give them away or donate if they can be useful to someone else or throw them away if they won’t be.
  • Keep your restroom clean and smelling fresh all the time. Don’t compromise on this one. Make sure the bath is clean, the sink is clean and the toilet bowl is clean. Don’t forget the floor it should be clean and dry especially around the toilet bowl. I always have spare bleach and air fresheners around to make sure I don’t run out.

2. Make it a routine.

Make your cleaning schedule a routine. This way it becomes part of your daily lives and happens naturally. Your kids will thank you for this in the future.

Their lives would be made easier when it comes to keeping their environment tidy and when guests come around you will spend less time cleaning up to welcome them because your home is already guest ready. All it may need will be a few cleaning touches here or there.

Making your cleaning schedule a routine helps you intentionally keep your home clutter free.

3. Have extras of the basics.

Having extra blankets, pillows, bed sheets, towels, tooth brushes etc will go a long way to keep you ready for your guests.

4. Creating Sleeping Spaces.

If you have a guest room in your home that’s awesome but if you don’t, that’s great too because you don’t need one to make your home guest ready. You can either offer your room or the kids room to your short stay guest (overnight guest) or you keep an Air bed handy for your overnight and weekend guests to use in the living room. Alternatively or additionally you can invest in a nice sofa bed or Futon in your living room. That way you don’t have to bother about storage of your air bed if you are short of space.

5. Create your own Pantry staples and Freezer staples.

There are basic Pantry Staples that make life easy for you. You need to create your own pantry staples with ingredients that can help you whip up dinners in less time. Things like pasta, rice, meat stock, coconut milk, Tomato paste.

For Freezer Staples are meals that help you whip up other meals faster. Soups and Stews are a freezer staples in Nigerian Cuisine. I try to have frozen Soups and Stews for my immediate family and for unexpected guests. I also have frozen meat stock ever ready for the next batch of Jollof Rice. It doesn’t only help when you have unexpected guests it is also helpful with meal planning. That way you can have food ready in a jiffy when you have sudden or impromptu guests.

These are super helpful.

  • Think whipping up some white rice to pair with the stew.
  • Making some Jollof Rice with frozen meat stock or pantry meat stock. Or Vegetable stock if you are making vegan Jollof Rice. Stew or Tomato paste can serve as a base for your Jollof Rice.

These are the 5 ways I can think of to keep a home guest ready. It’s not exhaustive. Any suggestions will be appreciated. So kindly pitch in down below in the comments section. I would love to hear your thoughts.
