How to make Turmeric Oatmeal Porridge?
Easy as Pie. Just add a dash or two of turmeric powder when making your traditional oatmeal porridge then top it up up with delicious berries when ready to serve. That's it. You can even use your homemade Turmeric milk to make your turmeric oatmeal.
You may be wondering.... why should I add turmeric to my oatmeal. Well... besides it's beautiful color and earthy taste, it's a super food. It's been used in Asian medicine for many years for its anti inflammatory properties. It's said to be great for detoxification and a host of other great properties.
There are many other ways you can use Turmeric in your food. The most popular is in curries. It can be used instead of curry powder in recipes in which curry powder is added for the color. Do you love colorful meals like I do? Check out this table of natural food colors to use to color your food. I wouldn't suggest using spinach for oatmeal though but sorrel leaves can be used.

Q. What is Turmeric?
A. Turmeric a spice used mostly in Asian cuisine it is predominantly used in India for curry dishes. It looks like ginger but has an orange color inside. Turmeric is also said to be a plant with great medicinal properties.
Q. Is this Turmeric Oatmeal Vegan?
A. No it's not but can easily be made vegan by swapping the milk used in this recipe for any plant based milk of your choice.
Q. What kind of Oats can I use in this recipe?
A. In this recipe I used my homemade oats flour which I made by blending Traditional oats ( rolled oats). You can use whole rolled oats, quick oats or steel cut oats but you would need to adjust the time. Quick oats would cook faster and steel cut oats would take a longer time to cook.
Q. I don't want to use Turmeric what else can I use to color my oatmeal porridge.
A. You can use any yellow food color to color your oatmeal. It would the vibrant color but not the attached health benefit of using turmeric.
Q. What is a good substitute for Turmeric?
A. For savory dishes curry powder would be a good substitute but for sweet dishes I don't know if any. Definitely not curry ?
Q. What kind of toppings can I use on this turmeric oatmeal
A. Fruits like strawberries, blueberries, bananas, raspberries can be used. You can add nuts like walnuts and almonds. Yum

Healthy Turmeric Oatmeal
Ingredients
- 1 ½ cups ground rolled oats or whole rolled oats if gluten-free, use certified gluten-free oats
- 3 ½ cups milk you can substitute with 2 cups of milk and 1 ½ cup of water. If vegan, use any plant based milk
- Sweetener of choice honey, maple syrup etc
- ½ teaspoon turmeric powder
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract optional
- Toppings:
- Fruits and nuts of choice
Instructions
- Put milk in a sauce pan, add the turmeric powder, salt, sweetener and vanilla extract. Mix it up.
- Add the oat flour or whole oats into the milk mixture. Turn on heat and begin to cook on medium low heat.
- Stir continuously to prevent burning and cook till oatmeal is fully cooked. Takes about 6 mins to get fully cooked.
- Turn off heat and serve immediately with topped with more milk, fruits and nuts of your choice
